How do our floating shelves work?
Pictured above are a set of softwood shelves with L-brackets.
Aside from bench tops, the most popular product we manufacture are our floating shelves. Made from solid Australian hardwoods or douglas fir, we build them to our customers dimensions and specification, including supplying and drilling the holes for the floating shelf brackets.
They're an attractive way to have the beauty of reclaimed timber without worrying about visual hardware or brackets, but there's a couple of things to keep in mind if you're thinking about them as an option for you!
Where can floating shelves be installed?
Our floating shelf brackets can be installed directly into solid timber studs, or high quality brick or block walls. Unfortunately, due to their need to bear the weight of the shelves, they can't be installed in plasterboard, steel studs, soft brick, or timber cladding walls.
For brick and block walls, holes can be drilled to suit the size of the shelf, but for stud walls we will need to drill the shelf brackets to match and meet the location of the studs. We recommend you work with a builder or installer who can specify the location of the studs and therefore the holes drilled for the brackets.
What dimensions do floating shelves need to be?
For the brackets we use, floating shelves do have a minimum and maximum size requirement:
200-250mm in depth (distance to the wall), and
18mm minimum in thickness
While shelves can be deeper than 250mm, it reduces the total weight the shelf is able to bear. If you’re looking for floating shelves that are wider or narrower, get in touch and we’ll see what might be possible.
What timbers can floating shelves be made from?
We manufacture our floating shelves from one of our standard timber types: Oregon pine/douglas fir, red mix Aussie hardwoods, or pale/blonde mix Aussie hardwoods. If you’d like to see the types of timbers available, come and visit us in store in Marrickville to get your hands on some samples!
