Spoon Carving Course: Axing a Spoon Blank
Beginner workshop
The foundation of every carved spoon begins with the axe. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn to safely and efficiently axe out a spoon blank from fresh green wood using a hatchet, maul, and hatchet block. We'll cover proper stance, controlled chopping techniques, and how to read the grain to create a balanced and well-shaped blank ready for further refinement.
This course is part of a three-part series, with follow-up workshops focusing on knife finishing, spoon carving class with Woody Weeds and decorative techniques, traditional spoon carving decoration workshop.
Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your axe work, this session will give you the confidence to shape wood with precision and efficiency.

This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with woodwork and who is looking for an introduction to the craft. The ornaments whittling course is open to participants 16 years and older.
The course is run using entirely hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved.

Knowledge on timber grain and how to effectively create your own spoon blanks in the future
Knowledge on how to sustainably source timber from woody weeds helping our native environments in the process
Knowledge on how to safely and effectively use a hatchet, maul, hatchet block and saw.

Protective eyewear is able to be borrowed during the class if you would like it.
Cut-resistant gloves are provided but if you would prefer to use your own, we use the Trojan brand of anti-cut gloves available at Bunnings stores.
You are required to wear closed-toe shoes. Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. wood chips, sawdust, oil, and paint will be present). Long hair needs to be tied back, and no loose-hanging jewellery should be worn.

Sine opening in 2022, each year we've been pleased to rescue more timber from landfill each year. Hardwoods and softwoods, common species and exotics – it's all beautiful and worth saving!

Since 2022 we've had over 1600 students through our doors to learn woodwork or other sustainable craft skills! Many are beginner woodworkers, with most saying they've never done any woodworking in the past but are exited to do more!
