If you’ve visited one of our repair or finishing courses in the workshop, you’ll have met Shane. He’s a whiz at woodwork, coatings, and furniture repair and restoration in person, but we’re thrilled to see him sharing that skill and knowledge more widely with his new series Finished.

Finished is a free web series on the science and art of wood coatings, and is also directed by one of our founders Liz. Together, the two of them (and a team of editors, experts and helpers) have released episode 1, which is all about wood.

It may seem a bit silly for a series about finishes to spend a whole episode on wood (and we have word that the next two are looking just at wood too!), but once you start watching you’ll understand why. We work with wood every day, and still learned so much – how the ways tree grow, including where, how fast, and how they move as they do, affects how timber looks and behaves when we work it and look at it, and as a result how it responds to different finishes.
